Increased Neuroanatomical Asymmetries in Dementia Revealed by Whole-Brain Analysis
Brain, a Journal of Neurology, recently published a study that used a novel technique to examine shape asymmetries of neuroanatomical structures in subcortical and cortical brain regions. The study reveals that neurodegeneration of subcortical structures in Alzheimer’s disease is not symmetric. Both the hippocampus and the amygdala show asymmetry, and this can provide a biomarker for early classification and prediction of Alzheimer’s disease.
